Schauer gives solid performance in first televised debate

In the first of three televised debates, State Sen. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, made a strong case on why he should be the next U.S. Congressman representing the 7th District, and his opponent offered nothing but his debunked attack ads.

The two squared off on live TV Saturday night in a debate at Jackson High School sponsored by Lansing TV station WLNS.

“There is a clear choice in this election,” Schauer said. “The choice is between the same old failed policies and my hands on approach. As your congressman I will wake up everyday trying to turn the economy around one job at a time.”

His opponent, extremist Republican Tim Walberg, used his opening statement to attack Schauer instead of talking about his polices and positions, and he used the same old debunked attacks, like the giving illegal immigrants driver’s license lie, Schauer was the deciding vote for the largest tax increase in history lie and even that he supported affirmative action. His closing statement was basically a rehash of the opening statement.

The questions came from a panel of three journalists and some from taped man-on-the- street interviews.

Walberg blamed the financial meltdown on President Clinton, falsely claiming he pushed legislation requiring lenders to give minorities loans they were not qualified for. He also voted against the bailout bill, but he had no alternative to solving the financial meltdown.

“One thing the Congressman is famous for is voting no, but hot having an alternative solution,” Schauer said.

One panelist asked what they would do about the $10 billion that is being spent a month in Iraq. Walberg still believes Saddam Hussein had something to do with the 9/11 attacks.

“That just demonstrates to me that the Congressman is not in touch with the facts,” Schauer said. “I have attended the funerals of five soldiers from Jackson and Calhoun Counties. We need to start getting out troops out of Iraq.”

A constituent asked the candidate’s position on the workplace smoking ban, including bars and restaurants, that’s before the Michigan Legislature. Schauer voted for the total ban that passed the Senate.

“I voted for this measure because it’s a public health issue,” he said.

Walberg, of course, is against the smoking ban, spouting blather about “Big Government” and “nanny state.”

"falsely claiming clinton pushed legislation requiring lenders to give minorities loans"

Falsely? Here is a little article from 1999 in the New York Times of all places... "Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people...

Oh! and lookie here a quote from Obama pal Franklin Raines,in the same 1999 article,"Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements," said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer

And oh no! A warning about those sub primes loans pumped up by Clinton and gleefully doled out by Frankin Raines and other Dems..."In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.
From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''

If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''

The truth is, it took two Democratic presidents working with Democratic majorities in Congress to engineer this economic crisis. Without the disastrous “fair housing” legislation imposed on this country by Carter, Clinton, Frank, Dodd and other Democratic lawmakers, this crisis would never have happened.

Add Barack Obama to that list, working as a leadership trainer for the radical organization, ACORN and in cahoots with Madeline Talbott. ACORN used intimidation tactics, public charges of racism and threats forcing banks to make hundreds of millions of dollars in "subprime" loans to uncreditworthy customers by abusing the Carter-era
“fair housing” legislation, including home loans to undocumented aliens in California.

Oh, someone's been reading the latest 101st Fighting Keyboarders email.

Was FM/FM part of the problem? Yes. Were they the major part of the problem? No. FM/FM didn't get into the subprime mess until 2005.

This was caused by investment banks and mortgage brokers, not FM/FM.
Look up Credit Default Swaps or CDSs. While you're at it, look up Phil Gramm. Before the Commodities Futures Modernization Act , CDSs were a $900 billion market...they've since ballooned to $60 trillion. It was a Ponzi scheme, destined to fail.

Now, please take your lies and half-truths everywhere.

I'm watching 60 Minutes right now...they're talking about CDSs, referring to them as a side bet, likening them to football fans who bet for or against a team.

This is what unregulated finance gets you...Wall Street turns into a bookie.

The last word in the last sentence should be elsewhere.

My friend KA, who knows more about finance than me, answered your false blather about Democrats causing the meltdown. I bought my home without a down payment six years ago, and despite some lean years a few years ago, things are fine and I have never even been late on a payment. Granted, it’s a VA loan, but suggesting working families who bought a home without a down payment is ridiculous, insulting and not true.

Calling ACORN a radical organization is also ridiculous. ACORN is a non-profit that has improved the lives of millions of poor and low income people in America for almost 40 years. They have done radical things like make affordable housing available for people in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, improving public schools and registering people to vote.
