Rally will celebrate the middle class tax cut


When the Republican teabaggers rally on Thursday on the day federal income tax returns are due to throw another, fake Astroturf teabagger party to spread hate and misinformation, a group of people who understand that the role of government is to protect and empower its citizens will also be gathering in Ann Arbor to celebrate President Obama’s middle class tax cut.

The celebration will take place from 6-8 p.m. Thursday April 15 in the middle of the diag near the main entrance to the graduate library at the University of Michigan campus.

This will truly be a spontaneous grassroots gathering, unlike the teabagger rallies because the teabaggers are backed by a pair of Washington, D.C. lobbying firms financed by millions of dollars from the insurance industry and promoted by the conservative media.

Apparently, the teabaggers also plan to spread misinformation and their trademark racist signs at the same time and place.

Where in the Constitution does it say that the governments role is to protect and empower its citizens?

I said it was a function of the government, not the Constitution. But, this is from the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

The function of government is to protect and empower its citizens.

You might want to look up those words and read the words of the founders to get the true meaning of those words. Right to life (live their lives), liberty (freedom) and the pursuit of happiness. You can pursue happiness. You may not reach it, you may not acheive what others achieve, but you have the same opportunity as every other citizen.


To secure the rights, the government is made up of it's citizenry, and their powers are on loan to them by the people. They are not powers that they have carte blanche with. Those powers may be removed from them. One of the ways is through elections. Another is through impeachments or trials, or recalls, among others.

If you read further into it, you'll see that when those that govern abuse their power it is the right and responsibility of the citizens to take back those powers.

The people are already empowered. They just lend the power to the elected and those powers may be removed in various manners.

It is the Constitution that gives the structure of government and limits the powers of government. The people already have the power. It's not given to them. It's their right. THe power is on loan to the government from the people.

I have “read the words of the founders” and a function of government is to protect and empower its citizens. If not, why bother to give the const to be governed?

Sure “when those that govern abuse their power it is the right and responsibility of the citizens to take back those powers,” and that’s why the Republicans were thrown out of power legally at the ballot box and not by some armed mob.
