Replace racist Schlessinger with a liberal/progressive talker

Now that rightwing talk show host “Dr.” Laura Schlessinger has given up her show after her racist tirade last week, perhaps WJR, the rightwing voice of the Great Lakes, can hire a progressive liberal talker and restore just a touch of balance and increase their ratings.

It makes no sense that the most powerful radio station in one of the most liberal cites in America in a Blue state has not a single progressive/liberal voice in the lineup. There are some excellent choices out there that thrive, despite being on fewer stations and on the lower power stations.

My choice is Stephanie Miller, but there are many successful hosts to choose from, like Thom Hartman – with Michigan roots – Ed Schultz, Randi Rhoades, Bill Press and many more.

Call or write WJR and ask them to restore some balance and fairness so they can again be called the “Great Voice of the Great Lakes.”

You can call them at (313) 875-4440 or toll free at (800) 859-0957; email them via their web site at http://www.wjr.net/contactus.asp or even snail mail at

Stephanie Miller is terrific. I've quit listening to Schultz and Hartmann.

I love her, too. I can only get her if I subscribe to the podcast, unless I’m east of Brighton on a good day. So, I’m at least a week behind most times. I also like Ed Schultz and Thom Hartman. I listen to them in the office on occasion on my computer. I would love to get in my car and turn on the radio and hear them, any liberal talker.

There's a very simple reason that liberal democrats aren't on WJR much. Nobody listens. They have had a liberal democrat on and he's still on. Mitch Albom. But they cut back his time because he wasn't making them any money.

The top ten radio hosts in the country by ratings are all conservative. None of those you mention crack the top ten.

People (remember the people?) don't listen to them. It's probably because anytime you want to hear a liberal democrat, you can pull off the expressway and roll down your window and listen to the guys standing there with the "Will work for food" signs. They don't want to work, they just want you to throw money at them. Typical liberal democrats. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

Horse manure like this shows what is wrong with conservatism today.

It won't admit that there are people out there like me who had successful business career and who don't see life through a prism of ignorance and resentment.

It won't admit that there are people like my father, who had a 40-year career, was married to the same woman for 45 years, and raised a family with liberal values because he's generous person who finds conservatism to be stunted, cold, and uninterested in the well-being of the people.

It won't admit that there are people like my grandfather, in many ways a conservative man who nonetheless had a profound mistrust of Republicans because he knew in his bones that they were out to screw over the working people Democrats cared about.

It won't admit that there are millions intelligent, productive people who detest bigotry and xenophonia, who respect the Constitution and don't want to amend it any time something happens that they don't like, and who know that conservatism will always put the country in a ditch, as it did for the eight years preceding Barack Obama.

The reason conservatives dominate radio is because they are loud, obnoxious, and limit themselves to a strict diet of red meat. Now there's something to be proud of.

There is a simple reason that no Liberal Democrats are on WJR, but not for the reason you gave; because Liberal talk beats rightwing whacko talk in many markets despite being on weaker stations.

Mitch Albom? Mitch Albom is not a Liberal Democrat. When was the last time the gas addled drug addict, “dr.“ laura or sean haity talked about the Red Wings, Lions, Tigers or Pistons?

How hard is it to be in the top 10 with as many radio stations rightwing tools have. Even someone as untalented and shrill as Laura Inghram is in the top 10. Like Stephanie Miller says, if she went back to her Republican roots she would be on 200 more stations the next day.

Like I said, give liberal takers an even playing field, meaning as many stations, and they will do as well or better. People do listen to them when they can find them or pick up the weak signal.

You are just full of shit, anonymous coward. I work harder than you have ever dreamed of.

Again, anonymous coward, I’m still waiting for you to back up your outrageous lie that we were “nearly shoulder to shoulder once.”

I agree with you 100 percent, K.

Thanks, CG.

I was lucky enough to see the president speak on Tuesday. At one point, I looked around the crowd of whites, blacks, Latinos, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans, men, women, and children and thought to myself, "Gee, I'm glad I'm not a conservative. I'd hate to go through life suspicious and fearful of anyone who doesn't look like me, I'd hate to be totally uncool and like bad music, and I'd hate to believe that down was up and that anyone who didn't agree with me was out to get me." If they weren't so dangerous to the American way, I'd almost feel sorry for them.

See, when NA writes "(remember the people?)," he isn't talking about the people I gathered with early this week. He means the ones who look like and think like him. To the NAs of the world, no one else qualifies as people.

Father of the world greatest burger flipper the problem progressive talk has is who owns the stations.. If I was a greedy, rich, old, right wing bastard who owns 200 to 300 radio stations wouldn't you figure I would have people on them telling idiots like yourself to defend my way of life at the expense of your own?

Stephanie Miller routinely beats the crap out of Laura Inrgham in the ratings. Anytime the progressive station beats the con station or have the nerve to attract a following the station hands changes the format to a sports talk station or a oldie station.

I bet Newstalk 1400 a station armed with D-listers of right wing talk earns the lowest ratings in southeast Michigan but since it's doing its job telling their low information listeners what to think they don't have to worry about a format change.

You are 100 percent right. Just give us something close to a level playing field, and liberal talk will do fine.
